LOS ANGELES - The regular season for the 2017 campaign within the Golden Coast Conference comes to a close this week with an eight game slate. Of those eight games, five will be five GCC match-ups that will play a role in the final seedings in the upcoming GCC Women's Championships.


2017 GCC Championships


Santa Clara's Hannah Buck (SO/Lafayette, CA) was a key cog in a pair of GCC road wins last week, scoring six goals, drawing four kickouts and posting three steals. The sophomore has been named the GCC Player of the Week for Apr. 20. She scored a game-high tying three goals on just four attempts, and three steals in Wednesday's 14-8 victory over Concordia, which snapped a three-game skid. The following day, Buck again tallied a game-high tying three goals and three kickouts drawn in a 7-6 win against Cal Baptist. She had two goals in just more than a one-minute span of the third quarter to help the Broncos build a 6-2 lead in a game they never trailed. Buck is the team leader in goals (39) and kickouts drawn (53), and ranks tied for third in steals (17).

The University of the Pacific moved back to the No. 9 spot in this week's Varsity Top-25 Poll for April 19. The Tigers are tied with Princeton at the nine spot. Right behind them at No. 11 is San Diego State. The Aztecs claimed their fourth straight regular season GCC Championship last week with a pair of GCC wins. LMU remained at No. 21 in poll while California Baptist dropped out of the No. 25 spot but is receiving votes.


The regular season will end with some big match-ups with the five GCC showdowns highlighting the schedule. It begins on Thursday with the ninth-ranked Tigers at Fresno Pacific at 6 pm and then Concordia is at CBU at 7 pm. Friday will see a top-25 non-conference match-up as the 21st-ranked Lions visit No. 6 UC Irvine at 7 pm. Saturday will feature the Lancers at Azusa Pacific at 11 am, followed by Santa Clara at Pacific and Concordia at LMU, both at noon. Saturday ends with another top-25 match-up as 18th-ranked UC San Diego travels to No. 11 San Diego St. at 1 pm. The regular season ends as Santa Clara travels to No. 13 UC Davis.

APU will end the regular season hosting California Baptist on Saturday. The Cougars are tied for fourth with Santa Clara in the league standings at 3-3. are led by Megan Myers with 39 goals and 58 points. Erica Marquez (JR/Burnaby, B.C., Canada) is third in the GCC with 46 steals.

The Lancers will host Concordia on Thursday and then take on APU on Saturday. The Lancers are 1-4 in the GCC and sit two games back of Santa Clara and APU, who are both 3-3. CBU is led by Paizlee Dreyer (SR/Riverside, CA) with 48 goals, rankings third in the GCC> Lizette Perez (SO/Commerce, CA) is fifth in the conference. Lina Medeiros (SR/Lake Elsinore, CA) leads the GCC with 61 total steals.

Concordia ends league play with a pair of road games, taking on CBU on Thursday and LMU on Saturday. Kelley Geurts (JR/Murrieta Valley, CA) leads the team with 30 goals and 31 total points.

Emily Knowles (JR/Long Beach, CA) scored five times and dished out an assist and Courtney Hall (SR/Poterville, CA) added 13 saves, but the Fresno Pacific women's water polo team couldn't hang on against Cal State Monterey Bay and fell 13-12 last Friday. The Sunbirds led 12-8 before the Otters stormed back for the win. FPU wraps up the regular season on Thursday, April 20 against Pacific. Prior to the 6 p.m. start time, the Sunbirds will honor their senior class.

LMU will travel to No. 6 UC Irvine before hosting Concordia on senior day on Saturday, The Lions are 4-2 in league play, a game ahead of APU and Santa Clara and a half game behind Pacific. Caitlin Schafer is second in the GCC with 57 goals and third in the league with 78 points. Kiana Etrata (SR/Orange, CA) is fifth in the league with 40 steals, tied with Schafer.

The Tigers will take on Fresno Pacific on the road and then host Santa Clara to close GCC play. The Tigers are 4-1 in league play, half a game above LMU. They are led by redshirt freshman Kyra Christmas with 45 goals, ranking sixth in the GCC. She is fourth in the league with 75 points.

No. 11 San Diego State will close its regular-season schedule on Saturday afternoon when it plays host to No. 18 UC San Diego at Aztec Aquaplex. The 16th annual Harper Cup game, which coincides with Senior Day, is set for a 1 p.m. PT start. Admission is free. SDSU returns to action after winning three home games last week, the last two of which secured its fourth straight undefeated Golden Coast Conference campaign and regular-season title. The Aztecs navigated the league season by going unbeaten in seven outings to finish atop the standings after being picked second in the preseason coaches poll

Santa Clara won a pair of Golden Coast Conference games last week to move into a tie for fourth in the standings. Hannah Buck and Annie Eldredge (SO/La Jolla, CA) scored three goals apiece to lead a balanced offensive attack in Santa Clara's 14-8 victory over Concordia on Wednesday. Maggie Oys (FR/Davis, CA) scored the go-ahead goal with less than two minutes to go in Thursday's 7-6 win against 25th-ranked Cal Baptist. Buck, who has scored in nine straight games, tallied a game-high tying three goals while Eldredge scored once and tallied three assists for Santa Clara. Eldredge has been one of the hottest Broncos, posting seven goals, two assists and six steals in the last three games.
